Jack will escape when Old Nick stops at a stop sign. Old Nick will bury Jack far from the house. She concocts a plan to escape: Jack will pretend to be dead and get rolled up in Rug. When Ma discovers that Old Nick lost his job, she's afraid he'll abandon the house. If we hadn't read the back of the book, we'd never have seen that coming. Ma eventually reveals to Jack that Room is a place where she's been kept ever since she was kidnapped seven years ago. When he uses the remote-controlled Jeep Old Nick got him for his birthday in the middle of the night, it scares Old Nick and he hurts Ma, leaving bruises on her throat. ![]() Ma hides Jack from Old Nick, but Jack starts acting out. If he knew about Narnia, we think he'd totally try to go there, because most nights a man called Old Nick comes in, gets in bed with Ma, and makes some creaky noises. Jack lives in Room with his Ma (and other objects like Chair, Rug, Skylight, Door, and more) Every day, they bathe, eat breakfast, play, learn, eat lunch, scream at Skylight, nap, watch a little TV, and eat dinner. ![]() Cheese for our fifth birthday, but whatever. He's spent the last five years inside of Room, which is, well, a Room. ![]() ![]() The writing takes a bit to get used to, but overall it isn’t bothersome. They grow to be close, and it is addicting to the reader. A weird combination, I know, but I grew to love Will, Tess, and Jem, and even Jess in some areas. ![]() It can only go downhill from there, and while it isn’t a steady decline, it’s as satisfying as it is tremulous. They teach her to use her “ability” in preparation for the Magister. Enter the Dark sisters, the creepiest characters I have come across in a long time. ![]() The story starts with Tessa traveling to London from New York because her brother sent for her, saying how spectacular London was and that since they were all alone now, they should be together. I can’t explain what it was or why I eventually came to enjoy it, but it did eventually get under my skin, and for that I was very surprised. It had a dark undertone, really the whole novel was dark, but through the darkness came a sliver of light and I was so very drawn and attracted to it. ![]() It is based in the 1800s (not AT ALL my comfort zone), and the way they spoke, because of being based so far back, was definitely different from what I am used to reading. Honestly? As mentioned in the synopsis, Cecilia finds a letter addressed to her, written by her husband, to be opened by her upon his death. ![]() There was a whole lot of mom-ing going on in this book. This book is told from three alternating perspectives: Cecilia Fitzpatrick (super mom), Tess (regular mom) and Rachel (elderly mother of a deceased child), with a few flashbacks thrown in there for good measure. ![]() ![]() Not necessarily by the storytelling – I would classify Moriarty’s writing style as adequate/typical for this genre – but by how much this book made me think about what I would do if I was in the various positions the characters found themselves in.
